My research interests lie in the general subject area of bioinformatics. Bioinformatics is constantly developing as a field, with the next ground-breaking research question only one upgrade away from an answer. Just like the field, the quantity of available data is also growing rapidly, calling for perpetually more efficient storage, management and pipelines. In my placement year at the Sheppard Lab I will be performing bioinformatics data analysis. This involves passing sequencing data through programs that construct, annotate and compare genomes, allowing conclusions to be drawn about the history and spread of the microbes in question. I am currently researching the epidemiology of Flavobacterium, a persistent pathogen that infects farmed fish. In the future I will be conducting work on Campylobacter, and possibly answering some research questions of my own.
